In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, it is increasingly important for young children to connect with the natural world. It provides children with the opportunity to explore, play, and learn in the great outdoors, offering a range of benefits for their development.

At Little Steps Day Care, this month’s blog looks at learning through nature and how it can benefit your little one. For information, call us in Renhold on 01234 889518.

Connection with the Environment

Nature provides a rich and ever-changing environment that captivates the curiosity of young children. It encourages them to explore, ask questions, and engage in unstructured play.

This interaction with the natural world fosters an enduring connection and respect for the environment.

Holistic Development

Learning through nature isn’t limited to academic knowledge; it encompasses physical, emotional, and social development. Activities in nature encourage children to move their bodies, explore their emotions, and interact with others in a non-traditional classroom setting.

Stimulation of the Senses

The great outdoors is a sensory wonderland. Children can feel the textures of leaves, smell the scent of flowers, listen to birdsong, and see the vibrant colours of nature. This sensory stimulation is essential for early cognitive development.

Nature Based Activities for Early Years

Here are some nature-based activities that can ignite the curiosity and creativity of young children:

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of items for children to find in the natural environment. This could include pinecones, feathers, different types of leaves, or even specific wildlife like birds or insects.

Encourage children to explore and collect these treasures while learning about the world around them.

Planting & Gardening

Introduce children to the wonders of gardening. Let them plant seeds, water plants, and watch them grow. Gardening not only teaches responsibility but also provides a hands-on lesson in biology and the life cycle of plants.

Nature Art

Encourage children to express themselves through art using materials found in nature. Leaves, twigs, rocks, and mud can be transformed into beautiful artwork. This activity stimulates creativity and fine motor skills.

Nature Journals

Provide children with blank journals to record their observations during outdoor adventures. They can draw pictures of plants and animals they encounter, jot down their thoughts, or even press leaves and flowers into the pages.

Keeping a nature journal helps them develop a sense of wonder and reflection.

Wildlife Spotting

Explore local parks or nature reserves and go wildlife spotting. Children can use binoculars to observe birds, look for animal tracks, or listen for sounds in the environment. This activity not only enhances their observational skills but also instils a sense of appreciation for wildlife.

Outdoor Storytelling

Encourage children to create their own stories inspired by the natural world around them. They can invent tales of magical creatures living in the forest or describe the adventures of animals they encounter during their outdoor expeditions. Storytelling promotes language development and imagination.

Rock Painting

Collect smooth rocks and paint them with bright, vibrant colours. Children can create their own outdoor art gallery by arranging these painted rocks in the garden. It’s a fantastic way to combine creativity and outdoor play.

In the enchanting world of early childhood education, one of the most rewarding experiences is fostering a love for reading in nursery-age children. Instilling a passion for books not only sets the stage for academic success but also ignites the spark of imagination that will accompany them throughout their lives.

At Little Steps Day Care, this month’s blog looks at encouraging a love for reading in nursery and how it can help young minds. For information, call us in Renhold on 01234 889518.

Building Language Skills

In nursery, books are invaluable tools. Reading aloud exposes children to new words, sentence structures and the rhythm of language. This lays down the foundation for effective communication and literacy.

Encouraging Curiosity

Books are a gateway to exploration and enquiry. They pique a child’s curiosity, encouraging them to ask questions, seek answers, and develop critical thinking skills. The act of turning pages becomes a journey of discovery.

Fostering Bonding

Reading together is not merely an educational activity; it’s also a heartwarming bonding experience. Whether it’s a nursery teacher sharing a story with a group of eager children or a parent reading a bedtime tale, these moments create lasting memories and positive associations with books.

Developing Concentration

Sitting down with a book, turning pages, and following a storyline from beginning to end helps improve a child’s attention span. This skill is essential for success in school and later in life.

Choosing the Right Books

Selecting the right books is crucial for capturing a child’s imagination and nurturing their love forreading. Ensure that the books you offer are suitable for the child’s developmental stage and reading level. Bright, colourful illustrations can captivate a child’s interest and make the story more engaging.

Additionally, choose books with compelling narratives, relatable characters, or valuable life lessons. Stories that resonate with children are more likely to leave a lasting impression.

Celebrating Reading Achievements

To keep the momentum of enthusiasm for reading going, it’s essential to acknowledge and celebrate reading achievements, no matter how small.Create a visual reading chart where children can add stickers or markers for each book they’ve read. This not only tracks progress but also adds an element of fun.

Designate a special reading corner where children can proudly display the books they’ve completed. This showcases their accomplishments and encourages a sense of ownership over their reading journey.

Offer praise and rewards for reaching reading milestones. Simple rewards like certificates, bookmarks, or even a special story time with a favourite teacher can be incredibly motivating.

As a parent or caregiver, you know how crucial sleep is for a child’s development and overall well-being. Adequate rest is especially vital during the early years when children are rapidly growing and absorbing new experiences. However, getting children to sleep or take naps can sometimes be a challenging task, especially in a nursery or daycare setting.

At Little Steps Day Care, this month’s blog looks at some of the common sleep and naptime challenges in nursery settings and how to address them. For information, call us in Renhold on 01234 889518.

Establishing a Consistent Sleep Routine

One of the most effective ways to help children sleep better is by establishing a consistent sleep routine. A consistent routine signals to the child that it’s time to wind down and prepares them for sleep.

In nursery, try to mimic the child’s home sleep routine as closely as possible. This might include activities like reading a book, singing a lullaby, or dimming the lights before naptime. Consistency provides a sense of comfort and security to children, making it easier for them to fall asleep.

Creating a Calm & Comfortable Sleep Environment

The sleep environment plays a significant role in promoting better sleep. Make sure the nursery is quiet, calm, and free from excessive noise and distractions during naptime. Each child should have a designated sleep space with a comfortable mattress or cot and soft bedding.

Keep the room at a comfortable temperature and ensure there is adequate ventilation. Some children may prefer soft background music or white noise to help them relax but observe individual preferences and adjust accordingly.

Addressing Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety is a common challenge during naptime, especially when children are transitioning to a new nursery or daycare environment. This anxiety can make it difficult for children to fall asleep, as they may worry about being away from their parents or caregivers.

To ease separation anxiety, establish a warm and nurturing bond with each child, offering reassurance and comfort during naptime transitions.

Encouraging Self-Soothing Techniques

Teaching children self-soothing techniques can be beneficial when they encounter difficulty falling back asleep after waking up during a nap. Simple strategies like providing a favourite stuffed animal or blanket for comfort can help children feel secure and calm themselves back to sleep. Encourage the use of these soothing items during naptimes.

Age-Appropriate Nap Schedules

Keep in mind that the amount of sleep required varies depending on a child’s age. Younger children typically require more sleep and may need multiple naps throughout the day, while older toddlers might transition to a single, longer nap.

Be aware of the individual needs of each child and adapt the nap schedule accordingly.

Patience & Flexibility

Lastly, be patient and flexible in your approach. Every child is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. It may take time for some children to adjust to the nursery’s naptime routine. Be willing to adapt and try different strategies until you find what works best for each child.

Art

Art is a great way to promote creativity in early years children. Art allows children to express themselves and explore their emotions. It also helps them to develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Children can express themselves through various art forms, including painting, drawing, sculpting, and collage-making.

Music is a powerful tool for early years education. It can help children to develop their language skills, memory, and coordination. Music also stimulates creativity and imagination. Listening to different genres of music and exploring how each type of music makes them feel can help children to develop an appreciation for different cultures and styles of music.

Providing musical instruments and encouraging children to experiment with different sounds and rhythms is an excellent way to promote creativity in early years children. Singing and dancing to songs are also fun ways to introduce children to music.

Movement

Movement activities can range from simple games such as “Simon Says” and “Red Light, Green Light” to more complex obstacle courses that require children to crawl, jump, and climb.

Incorporating yoga into early years education can also help children to develop mindfulness and relaxation skills. Additionally, Outdoor play provides children with ample space to run, jump, and explore. It’s important to encourage children to play freely and use their imagination during outdoor playtime.

Early years nursery education provides a crucial foundation for a child’s emotional development. During these formative years, children begin to develop their understanding of emotions and how to manage them. As such, it is important for early years nurseries to focus on supporting children’s emotional development to help them build strong, healthy relationships and develop essential life skills.

This month’s blog at Little Steps Day Care looks at how you can help support children’s emotional development in Early Years nursery. For information, call us in Renhold on 01234 889518.

Providing a Safe & Secure Environment

Children need to feel safe and secure in their environment to feel comfortable and confident in expressing their emotions.

Nurseries can create a safe and welcoming space where children feel valued and supported, promoting a sense of security that is essential to emotional development.

Encourage Emotional Expression

Children need to be encouraged to express their emotions in a healthy and constructive way. Early years nurseries can provide a range of opportunities for children to express their emotions, such as through art, music, and drama activities.

These activities help children learn how to express their emotions in a safe and positive way.

Building Positive Relationships

Positive relationships with both adults and peers are essential for emotional development. Early years nurseries can foster positive relationships by promoting social interactions and group activities that encourage teamwork and collaboration.

This can help children develop empathy and an understanding of others’ emotions.

Promotes Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation is the ability to manage and regulate one’s emotions. Early years nurseries can support emotional regulation by teaching children techniques such as deep breathing, counting, or visualization.

These techniques can help children calm down when they are upset or overwhelmed.

Providing Opportunities for Self-Reflection

Children need to learn to reflect on their emotions and how they are feeling. Early years nurseries can provide opportunities for children to reflect on their emotions and how they can manage them.

This can be done through circle time discussions, journaling, or other reflective activities.

Fostering A Growth Mindset

Children need to learn that emotions are natural and that it is okay to make mistakes. Early years nurseries can promote a growth mindset by encouraging children to try new things and take risks.

This can help children develop resilience and a positive outlook on life.

The holidays are almost upon us. With parties, decorations and tasty treats bring anxiety, meltdowns and sensory overload. Christmas can be very overwhelming for toddlers, so it is important you have a plan in place.

This month’s blog at Little Steps Day Care offers some tips to reducing sensory overload this Christmas. For information, call us in Renhold on 01234 889518.

What Is Sensory Overload During the Holidays?

Sensory overload is particularly common in a developing child. Wherever you are, recognising the signs are important in helping your child cope and regulate. Some signs include:

Heightened Behaviour – Jumping off furniture, running around etc.

Bothered by Noise – Covering their ears, making loud noises.

Aggressive Behaviour – Pushing, pulling, arguing and hitting.

Frequent Meltdowns

Withdrawn from Activities

Christmas is a busy time.

Be Prepared

This time of year can be very off schedule, so routines may be different. There are lots of things to do and there can be added stress trying to fit everyone and everything into a small timeframe.

At school, children have got a good routine. Timetable strategies are a great way to ensure your day runs smoothly and avoids a meltdown. It is important to put your child’s needs first and find a good balance.

Give Them A Separate Room for Downtime

If your child is struggling to stay calm in situations involving lots of people, make sure you are there for them. Give them a room so they can have some downtime from all the Christmas chaos.

Ensuring your child has an environment away from noise and crowds is important.

Limit Gift Opening

This will be the most difficult part of your holiday experience. Like any parent, gift giving can go into overdrive. Although gift giving can be fun, it can cause a sensory overload if your child has sensitivities to certain materials.

Some children may find the excitement of a surprise overwhelming. If so, it may be helpful to open presents over a longer period.

Our team of staff are dedicated to providing quality care and education. As autumn has arrived, we are here to help you keep your kids entertained at home on dull days.

Build a Den

Keep the kids occupied by making a den together. Gather all the blankets and pillows that you can find and create a structure using tables and chairs. Once the structure is created, allow the kids to add their own finishing touches. Use it for playing games, relaxing, and sleeping.

Make it a competition and see who can build the best den. This activity is sure to keep the kids busy for hours.

Arts and Crafts

Go for a walk around your local park and collect some leaves, pinecones, and sticks. Take these back home and create some pictures together. Watch your child’s imagination run wild.

You could also use household items such as empty boxes, toilet roll tubes, and cellotape to make your own robots, castles, and much more. Let your child’s creative side come out.

Sensory Play

Make a sensory bin for them to explore. Fill a small container with objects such as leaves, rocks, sand, and sticks. Alternatively, you can use foods like pasta, rice, beans, along with spoons and small toys to hide and let your children find. Sensory play helps your child grow and develop.

Scavenger Hunt

Take a walk outdoors and see how many autumn themed items you can find. Make your usual walk into an adventure. Once you’re back from your walk, you could create some pictures with the items that you find.

Build Lego

Lego can provide hours of fun and entertainment. Get creative and build houses, cars, animals, and much more. This is a great way to develop your child’s fine motor skills. Let their imagination go crazy and build some amazing creations.

As the sunny days start to disappear and the forecasts get worse. Keeping your child entertained can be a struggle regardless of the weather! But as parents, we both know it’s harder when the doors must be shut, and the kids have to stay inside.

At Little Steps Day Care we try our best to not only give you some free time but most importantly let your child have fun in a different environment. Especially on a rainy day we can make sure your little one stays entertained.
Make A Big Racetrack

Many kids love playing with cars. So why not have some fun and set up a big racetrack. Get creative with objects around the house and make sure it’s a race you and the kids remember!

Bake A Cake

On a rainy day, there’s not a better time to get the kids in the kitchen. Either let the young ones go wild and make something bright and colourful or teach your kids how to make a lovely brownie. Getting your kids interested in baking from a young age can be very beneficial later in life.

Paper Cup Tower

It might not be your first idea. But by simply buying some paper or plastic cups your child can have so much fun. Building different towers can easily keep them entertained. Let your child’s creative side come out.

Watch A Film

We all know how handy films can be to keep your kids occupied. New or old, see what they like the look of and go from there. This is an easy way to keep them busy for a couple of hours.

Play in Puddles

Obviously depending on how light the rain is, why not go on a walk? Get their little wellies on and go make a splash. Kids love nothing else than getting wet and messy with puddles!

Start Your Childs Journey Today

Every child is unique, and we believe this should be embraced from the start. Give your child the comfort of a family environment while they embark on the beginning of their educational journey.
Why is it Important?

Amongst other benefits napping helps kids with learning, moreover, providing a boost in memory which is more apparent in those who nap on a consistent schedule. As well as this, naps also help in regard to improving mood swings your child may experience, a fact which has been proven via multiple studies.

The trends linking obesity and lack of sleep are far too apparent to be in any way disregarded, and naps should be taken seriously as a vital component to your child’s long-term health. This is largely due to tiredness reducing the amount of activity your child will be willing to partake in.

How This Will Help You

Many of the benefits seen will help you as the positive effect on your child’s temperament will have an obvious influence on how easy your child is to raise. Not to mention the respite and rest you get during the periods in which your child rests, helping your own temperament as much as your child. The universal improvement for you and your child makes this highly advisable and should be endorsed by all parents of young children.

Providing the Correct Environment

The best place is the very same in which your child sleeps at night-time due to the comfort brought about by the familiarity. As well a this, here are some tips that will help set the scene and create a positive environment:

Draw Curtains

Keep the room quiet

Ensure your child’s comfort

These are just some of the tips, and of course the methods that prove effective can vary from child to child as no two people are the same.

Starting school is a huge milestone for every child. Giving your child the best start to their school career can have a positive impact on their whole education.

This month’s blog at Little Steps Day Care looks at the importance of school readiness. For more information, call us in Renhold on 01234 889518.

Prepare Them Emotionally

New places and people can be very daunting for a child, so it’s important to get to know the school. Becoming familiar with their new surroundings and teachers will reassure your child that they are going into a welcoming environment.

Socialise Your Child

Socialising your child is important. If they have attended nursery prior to starting school, they may already have friends in their new class. However, if this is not the case, try to connect with other parents and their children in the class.

Try to arrange playdates over the holidays so your child can make friends before starting school with them.

Prepare Them Developmentally

It is important you help your child develop their independence. You should help your children transition from dependence on adults to positive and confident individuals.

Teachers and staff will help support your child in becoming more independent, but there are many ways to support them before school.

Promote Independence

For subjects such as PE and outdoor learning, it is important that your child can dress and undress independently. Otherwise, they will continue to be reliant on adults.

Additionally, it is important that your child can eat independently so they are not reliant on adults to help. Teach your child how to use cutlery so they can develop their skills over time.

Prepare Them for Learning

The first year of primary school will consist of lots of learning. Your child’s academic development will be supported by their development in the social, personal, language and physical areas.

Read with Them

One of the things your child will learn in their first school year is reading simple words and sentences. However, it is important that they are exposed to stories and books from a young age. This will help develop your child’s listening and attention skills.

While they do not need to be able to read books independently before school, they should have opportunities to enjoy and share books with you. Try and incorporate it within your daily routine.

Simple Counting

Your child will have many opportunities to count from an early age. They will have learned through games and songs in nursery.

Encouraging our child to practice counting helps number patterns become second nature. Learning numbers doesn’t always have to be boring.
