The early years are important for your child’s development. During this time, they learn about how the world around them works. They also learn a lot about their feelings and how to express them appropriately.

In this month’s blog at Little Steps Day Care, we look at how you can help your child express their feelings. For more details, call us in Renhold on 01234 889518.

Explain the Different Feelings

Emotional intelligence is something that children have to learn. This can make navigating thoughts and reactions to certain situations difficult for them.

You can help your child out by appropriately naming feelings. Be open with your own feelings and your child will learn to apply them to their own thoughts.

Offer a Nurturing Connection

When you notice your child getting upset, the best thing you can do is respond with empathy. This helps you see things from their perspective and helps you understand the reason behind their meltdown.

In doing so, you can prevent the situation from escalating and create an ideal atmosphere for open communication.

Resist Punishment

One way to help children express their feelings is resisting the urge to punish them. Discipline does nothing to help your child deal with their emotions. As a result, they may try to bottle it up until they suffer from a meltdown.

Try to help your child process and manage their emotions in positive ways. You should do so until they can handle it themselves. You can lead through example by speaking in a calm tone of voice and giving them activities to allow them to express their emotions.

Praise Often

Give praise when your child talks about their feelings. This shows them that they did the right thing, and you are proud that they reached out to you.

Children should know that it is okay to express their feelings and they should be given opportunities to do so appropriately. The more your children get to express how they feel, the quicker they will learn to independently regulate their emotions.

What are the Benefits?

Supressing emotions can lead to several issues, including reduced confidence and forming strong relationships. The advantages of helping your child express their feelings helps them develop:

Empathy

  • Positive Relationships
  • Good Mental Health
  • Less Behavioural Issues
  • Increased Confidence
